Chapter 11: Reese

Reese stood beside Leo as he checked them both into their rooms—with an S, as in two separate rooms. She was thrilled with their arrangement for the duration of the conference, but a girl needed her space. The hotel lobby was bustling, people in various degrees of professional dress buzzing back and forth, wearing badges, greeting colleagues. The tall ceilings and marble floors echoed so it was impossible to hear any one conversation, the amalgam of voices sounding more like the vocal equivalent of an aircraft engine.

The flight this afternoon had been smooth and uneventful. She and Leo had sat in first class where the seats were nice and wide—and she could feel his body heat radiating onto her side from his window seat. But they weren’t yet in Vegas, she’d reminded herself. So, she’d forced herself to concentrate on the work she needed to get done, and they’d both stared at their respective laptops for the majority of the extremely short flight. The car had been waiting to bring them to the hotel, just as she’d arranged, and traffic had been blessedly light. Now that they were at the hotel, that meant they were officially here. Their agreement was on.

Leo’s voice was suddenly at her ear and she froze as a heat wave crashed through her body.

“You didn’t book yourself a suite?”

She drew a steadying breath and turned to him as he pulled back enough to stand upright. The space let her brain reengage. “No, I booked a standard room. But they put you in the corner penthouse suite, right?” She’d spoken to reservations just this morning before their flight to confirm the booking she’d already confirmed the day before. If they messed it up, so help her—

“Best room in the place, yeah,” Leo replied, lifting his keycard like it provided proof. It didn’t look any different than the ones he handed her next. “Did you have something to do with that?”

She just smiled and reached for the card sleeve he was offering. “It’s my job to make sure you have everything you need.” Wow, that had not sounded so suggestive in her head.

Leo twitched and the keycard escaped the sleeve. He caught it mid-air, then extended it to her. “Take my spare key,” he said. Then added quickly, “in case you need to get into my room for whatever I’ll undoubtedly forget during an event. Or... other reasons.” His shrug was confident, casual, and so sexy it made her thoughts skip in her head.

He was handing her a key. To his hotel suite. Her skin got warm and her heart tripped a beat as she took it from him. She tucked it into her bag for safe keeping as he slid his into his leather messenger satchel.

Mentally, she checked her expression to make sure she wasn’t about to give him sexy-eyes, then looked up at him again—she had work business to address. “We should sync up before you head to the exhibit floor. You have an event over dinner, and a cocktail hour, plus your meeting with Alonso.
